      <image:caption>This is a diagram to show a little bit of my family tree. It starts with my Grand-Father Lynn White and ends with my Great-Great-Great-Grandfather Wilford Woodruff. When I was young I felt that this lineage made me have some sort of special connection to the religion - especially since I believed that my family (both living and dead) would know what was in my heart and be proud of me for living my life for the gospel.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - My Geneology - Wilford Woodruff</image:title>
      <image:caption>“Born March 1, 1807, and raised in Connecticut, Wilford Woodruff was a miller by trade. He joined the Church in 1833 and served two missions before being ordained an Apostle in 1839. As a member of the Quorum of the Twelve, he completed four additional missions, presided over the temple in St. George, Utah, and served six years as Church Historian. He was sustained as Church President on April 7, 1889. As President of the Church, he dedicated temples in Salt Lake City and Manti, Utah, oversaw the organization of the Genealogical Society, and reemphasized the value of historical record keeping. After much pondering and prayer, he received a revelation that the Latter-day Saints should cease the practice of plural marriage. In 1890, he wrote the Manifesto, testifying that the Church had ceased teaching the practice of plural marriage. In addition to being the Lord’s mouthpiece for that revelation, President Woodruff also left a legacy that emphasized missionary and temple work. He died in San Francisco on September 2, 1898”. - LDS church history</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Resigning my LDS membership</image:title>
      <image:caption>I also grew up being told how important chastity is...that breaking the law of chastity was a sin almost as bad as murder. One prophet went as far as to basically say it was better to be killed than to allow someone to take your chastity!! Basically better dead than raped! What kind of message is that to send to young people. The book where this message is written is still being sold in Deseret book shops...and it has never been denounced by the church (despite also containing disgusting sexist and homophobic language). I wont get into detail about why this subject effected me personally, but I will say that because of these teachings I felt like I had sinned for something not my fault. There are several other problems I have with the history of the Church, having now read the CES letter I know there are so many inconsistencies not only in Joseph Smith's testimony, but within the church itself. I have heard it argued that men lead the church, and as such they are prone to error. But I have realised its not logical to follow a church where it's really a coin flip if they are getting their information from "God" or just making things up in their own head.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Resigning my LDS membership - This journey has not been an easy one, and there have been nights where I slip back into the same mindset of fearing the what-ifs.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Each day I am still learning, growing, and trying to take steps towards self acceptance. As comforting as it was to “know” that the church is true and to believe that I would see my family and friends again after death, I would never want to go back to those beliefs. I want to spend the rest of my life living like it is all that matters, making the most of the moments I have with the people I love. I want to make a difference to the people living now. I want to be free to live on my terms, accepting myself for who I am. Nothing is worth giving up who you are, and I can definitely say that things are better on the other side.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Resigning my LDS membership - The light of your countenance is your own.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Church leaders would have you believe that if you leave the church you will have nothing. For years I heard the importance of guarding myself against the adversary who has the ability to plan thoughts in my head. That when choosing who to befriend that I should follow the example set by the city of Enoch and choose to live by the standards set by Jesus - otherwise it would be as though I were accepting friendship from the likes of those living in the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah! The LDS church likes to think that they are a beacon of light in a world of darkness, and that should you leave the church that you will live an unhappy and unfulfilling life. They warn that for those that choose to reject the gospel will life a sad and unfulfilling life, and that we will ultimately face long-term eternal consequences that not only effect us, but our families as well. The type of language they use works well to keep members living in ignorance, fearful of the world and the perceived darkness in it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Belief Systems - Restoration of the Gospel: The first vision - This was recorded in Joseph Smith’s diary by his scribe (Warren Parrish) between 1835-1836 and it was first published by Dean C. Jessee in Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought (1971). From this account you can see that Joseph states that he went to the grove to pray about which religion was true, and when he attempted to pray he could not as his “toung seemed to be swolen” and he began to hear a noise like someone approaching him, as the sound drew closer he sprang to his feet only to find no one there. when he attempted to pray again he was successful and when he called upon the Lord he claims “a pillar of fire appeared above my head, it presently rested down upon me head, and filled me with joy unspeakable, a personage appeared in the midst of this pillar of flame which was spread all around, and yet nothing consumed, another personage soon appeared like unto the first, he said unto me thy sins are forgiven thee, he testifyed unto me that Jesus Christ is the Son of God; and I saw many angels in this vision I was about 14 years old when I received this first communication”.</image:title>
      <image:caption>It is clear just from this short description that again there is a different account of events. Here Joseph describes a “pillar of fire” coming down and an unnamed personage speaking to him to testify that Jesus is the Son of God. This personage was accompanied by “many angels”.</image:caption>

Instead, they are putting a dollar amount on the food/clothing they are donating, and on the services they are providing.</image:title>

      <image:title>Articles - LDS Church Advocates For Diversity While Having Historic Teachings of Racism and Homophobia: Part 2 - For example, in their FAQ the church has a question that states their position on “race relations”. Here they state that there was a period of time in the LDS church where they “stopped ordaining male members of African descent” and they claim “it is not known precisely why, how or when this restriction began in the Church, but it has ended”.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Not only do we have a clear record of how this policy came into place, but we also have a recorded history of how leaders felt there was scriptural justification for their prejudice. In answering this question the LDS Church denies their history and gives a disingenuous answer to avoid making themselves out in a poor light. This is the opposite of recognising prejudice and repenting.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - LDS Church Advocates For Diversity While Having Historic Teachings of Racism and Homophobia: Part 2 - The print version of the book contains the very theory that the LDS church claims are no longer part of its belief system, that dark skin is a curse from God to the Lamanite people for their iniquities. This curse was said to have been given so that the Lamanites would not be enticing to the Nephites. they and their seed would be a loathsome people (2 Nephi 5: 21-23; 1980).</image:title>
      <image:caption>Somehow this belief that they claim was simply a theory put forward by some leaders was printed into the books used by the church all over the world.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - LDS Church Advocates For Diversity While Having Historic Teachings of Racism and Homophobia: Part 2 - In 2021 you would think that these ideas would be a thing of the past, but unfortunately this is not the case. Historically the Book of Mormon has quite clearly suggested that having black skin is a curse from God and this doctrine still impacts teachings today. An example of history permitting through to present-day teaching is the way that the church views inter-racial marriage. In a letter written in 1947 President David O, McKay states “from the days of the Prophet Joseph Smith even until now, it has been the doctrine of the Church, never questioned by any of the Church leaders, that the Negroes are not entitled to the full blessings of the Gospel”. He then goes on to say that intermarriage is “repugnant” and it does not have the sanction of the church as it is contrary to Church doctrine.</image:title>

      <image:title>Articles - IICSA Investigators Fail Survivors of Child Abuse and Will Fail To Protect Future Victims. - One very real problem is the lack of concern that IICAS seem to have over extremely worrying and rhetoric around what a “willing participant” is in relation to child sexual abuse, and what they would consider an adult being “ a few years older” is.</image:title>
      <image:caption>While IICSA did make a point in saying that it would be “better to clarify” what these phrases mean, this is simply not good enough. There should never be a grey area when it comes to child abuse, and from a legal perspective, a child can not consent to sexual activity if they are underage. There is a term for this, it is called statutory rape.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/60d36fff78e3ab577824e6be/1630758238416-9SV3X0W6GORH9MWKTCFI/A3E7286D-7770-440A-92F0-CF470D61D756.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Articles - IICSA Investigators Fail Survivors of Child Abuse and Will Fail To Protect Future Victims. - Another important fact to take note of is that the LDS church believes that through Priesthood authority (power and authority to act for God) that they have the power of decrement, that is the power to tell when someone is telling the truth. this “power” has historically been used by Church leaders to tell whether allegations of abuse are true. For example in a case from 2012 it was revealed that a Bishop was alerted to potential child abuse by one of his congregation members, upon speaking with the abuser who denied the allegation this bishop used prayer and this “power” to determine that the abuser was telling the truth. He did not investigate the allegations further or report the issue to the police as he did not believe that any abuse had taken place. Unfortunately this means that the abuser was able to go on and abuse more children before finally being caught and convicted. This is not the only case of its kind, and it shows another massive loophole in the reporting process, if the church leader can claim that he was not aware of abuse taking place because his “power” told him there was no abuse taking place then they feel their inaction is justified.</image:title>
      <image:caption>In addition to the belief that this “power of discernment” can help to identify if an abuser is telling the truth, it has also been used to determine if a victim of abuse has any responsibility for what happened. While this quote is from a talk given in 1992, it is the first article that comes up if you search “abuse” under magazine articles on the LDS website. Sadly there are victims of rape and abuse who are still subject to this type of thinking by Church leaders.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - LDS Church Advocates For Diversity While Having Historic Teachings of Racism and Homophobia: Part 1 - Overcoming Racism and Prejudice: We Can Build Bridges</image:title>
      <image:caption>This article has a lot to say on the topic of abandoning prejudice and promoting respect for all of Gods children. It starts off by reminding readers that “each of us has a divine potential because each is a child of God. Each is equal in His eyes”. It reminds readers of their doctrinal commission to “be one” (John 17:21–23; Doctrine and Covenants 38:27), and that as we work towards this goal we should abandon “attitudes and actions of prejudice”. Members can work together to build Zion and at the same time “build bridges of friendship, cooperation, and understanding”. The writer explains that there is “room for everyone” in the church and members should be looking to see how they can help create a community of Saints where everyone feels welcome regardless of their differences. “We are all connected…If we have any hope of reclaiming the goodwill and sense of humanity for which we yearn, it must begin with each of us, one person at a time.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - Elder Holland Makes Veiled Threat To University Staff Over A Pro-Gay Speech Made Over 2 Years Ago - Elder Holland explains that he started his speech by talking of his love for BYU, but that “every so often we need a reminder of the challenge we constantly face here”. The challenge he is speaking of is combatting behaviour that goes against gospel standards. Holland reiterates that as BYU is an extension of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints then integrity would demand that “our lives be absolutely consistent with and characteristic of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ” and that “Staying in harmony with the Lord’s anointed” would be the best achievement we can obtain until we “have grown to the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ”.</image:title>

      <image:title>Articles - Elder Holland Makes Veiled Threat To University Staff Over A Pro-Gay Speech Made Over 2 Years Ago - As a former member of the Church and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I find it highly offensive that Elder Holland would advocate for “more musket fire” in an attempt to get LDS members to speak out more in support of their traditional family values because the community is already marginalised and discriminated against. Latter-day Saints who are LGBTQ+ are constantly fed that the love and attraction they feel can never be acted on, and that these feelings are messages from the adversary who is trying to lead them away from the church. He then pours salt into the wound by talking about just how upsetting the topic was for him and other brethren who had conferred on the subject, as though the pain he feels could in any way match the suffering of those who have lived through years of mental abuse from the church’s stance on sexuality.</image:title>

      <image:caption>In an article written by Hugh W. Nibley he discusses what it means to have dominion over the earth, and how this relates to our time here on earth. Nibley argues that we are quite capable of exercising the power of dominion that has been granted to us by God, but that we must take care with this responsibility as if we fail then we can only bring “the condemnation of God and the contempt of all creatures”. <image:caption>In 1981 a book was published that contained a number of talks and articles by President Spencer W. Kimball, its purpose was to address a range of topics that young people may struggle with as they get older. In this book Kimball discusses the responsibility that we all have to overcome our weaknesses and live according to the gospel. He details that we “have this life of limited hearts in which to learn of God and to become the masters of our own destiny; we have in addition to this life plus eternities to learn of the earth and the things thereon, and to accumulate secular knowledge what will help make us gods, which is our destiny”.</image:caption>

While doing a tour of Brigham Young University they come upon a group of children making clay spheres. Young stopped to watch them work and commented to Brimhall “these children are not at play making mud worlds, the time will come when some of these boys, through their faithfulness to the gospel, will progress in knowledge, intelligence, and power, in future eternities, until they shall be able to go out into space where there is unorganised matter and call together the necessary elements, and through their knowledge of and control over the last and powers of nature, to organise matter into worlds, on which their posterity may dwell, and over which they shall rule as gods”.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - Updates: Will I get my own planet after Death? - Gospel Principles: Chapter 47 - Exaltation</image:title>
      <image:caption>Gospel Principles was written both as a personal study guide and as a teacher’s manual. It is a book made up of 47 chapters that each discuss a particular topic related to church doctrine, ordinances, or personal responsibility. This book has a chapter that explains that “Exaltation is eternal life, the kind of life God lives. He lives in great glory. He is perfect. He possesses all knowledge and all wisdom. He is the Father of spirit children. He is a creator. We can become like our Heavenly Father. This is exaltation”. If members of the church can prove themselves faithful and worthy to enter into the highest degree of the celestial kingdom of heaven then they will become exalted. The book further explains that those who are exalted will also receive other blessings, one of which is that they will become gods.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Come, Follow Me - Come, Follow Me: Old Testament - Genesis 3–4; Moses 4–5 - This article is a recent example of changes being made to older articles that are very explicit in the roles that a husband and wife have.</image:title>
      <image:caption>This article advises young men that“by understanding the patriarchal order of marriage, a young Latter-day Saint man will be selective in choosing a wife who understands the manner in which he is to preside during their marriage”. It also advised that “modern revelation declares how one holding the priesthood will officiate and gives needed insights into how a man will preside as a priesthood holder, particularly over his wife and family”. The article goes on to warn that whenever a wife is allowed to challenge the right of her husband to officiate in the home it will have consequences.</image:caption>
