FAQ

  • Is the LDS church centred around God and Jesus Christ?

No. While the church has revamped a lot of their material meant for investigators to include a Christ centred appearance, if you attend meetings long enough you will soon see that Joseph Smith and other Prophets are held in high esteem. The word of the Prophet is considered to be words from God, and priesthood holders are meant to be able to receive revelations from the Holy Spirit. This becomes problematic when these men make problematic declarations in the name of God.

  • What is the power of discernment and why is this belief frought with danger?

The LDS church teaches that worthy priesthood holders are given the gift of discernment. This gift supposedly allows them to “understand or know something through the power of the Spirit…It includes perceiving the true character of people and the source and meaning of spiritual manifestations”.

This problem with this belief is that many people have their inner dialogue, and just because you have faith that you are being inspired by God, it doesn’t mean that these feelings are true. Church leaders have abused this power in determining the truth of abuse accusations, and to determine how much responsibility abuse victims hold and what they need to do to repent.

  • Did Jospeh Smith marry underage girls?

Yes. While LDS apologists often try and argue that this behaviour was normal for this time, it wasn’t. Joseph Smith was marrying girls as young as 14, and used coercive methods to get them to agree.

While it is true that people could get married at such a young age, it was normally a marriage to someone their own age and not some 30/40 year old man.

  • I attended a church service and everyone was so nice, is this love bombing?

I would never want to say that all LDS members don’t genuinely care about people in the congregation, but this pattern of behaviour is very typical of love bombing.

Love bombing is a technique employed by high control religions to shower new members with attention and affection in order to make new members feel welcome and have a sense of unity within the group. This can help to mask problematic beliefs or behaviours held by members.

  • Is the LDS Church a cult?

    Yes.
